I installed karmic and discovered that the desktop version does not offer the option to encrypt the home directory using ecryptfs.

Is there a way to do it now or do I need to reinstall using the alternate installer?

Are you certain about that? (http://www.ubuntugeek.com/encrypted-home-now-offerred-at-installation.html)
You could try this procedure (http://gentoo-blog.de/ubuntu/encrypted-home-and-swap-partition-on-ubuntu-9-10-karmic/), but I haven't tried it.

Thanks, that info is for LUKS, though. I want to use ecryptfs. I use LUKS on my encrypted USB pen drives.

I am going to try to install Karmic again and if that fails, I will install Jaunty and then upgrade. I will use the text-based installer. It is slower but offers the option of encrypting the home directory.
