If so what does it look like,

I now realise that I have never seen it. All I get is a black screen for a short instance maybe 10 seconds with the login prompt. then the text powered down and then it shuts down.

But no logout/shutting down splash.

Thanks.

Yeah, the first time I shut it down I thought I broke something, it was so fast.

It has a logout screen. it's the same image as the first splash screen during boot up: a white ubuntu logo that fades to nothing and WHAM! reboot.

That is definitely not present on my system. A fresh install from the alternate CD.

After yesterdays kernel update + other updates that came with it, I am now seeing the shutdown screen for the first time. They must have fixed something.

my karmic's shutdown screen shows twice -- it takes about 10 secs to shutdown (i think because of non-free drivers)

It only comes with the ubuntu-artwork package, which is included in the ubuntu-desktop package. if you run Xubuntu, Kubuntu, etc. then it will not show.

I installed via the alternate CD. So it may have been left out in that as well.
