View Full Version : Why doesn't Gnome have Widgets?

It seems like everybody's got widgets these days; OS X (I think), Windows 7, Opera and KDE 4! How come Gnome does not?

It's not like their panel apps are the same or as advanced as these widgets. They help, but it still seem to lack in functionality in comparison.

I think Gnome calls them screenlets. Never used them myself.

Have a look at screenlets (not installed by default).

I heard screenlets was a dead project? Maybe I'm wrong.

Gnone never really had one single desktop widget project, you had screenlets, desklets and others too.
On screen widgets were never a priority for gnome

It is. Someone picked it up though under a new name "Universal Applets". Either way, it's not officially a part of Gnome.

And Conky, though its primarily text-based so I'm not sure it fully counts.

Plus conky works the same on all systems so it's not gnome's.

Screenlets were awesome, if I remember correctly, some of the developers had a falling out because code was being reused but the writer of that code was only being mentioned as a co-writer by another one who just fixed a few bugs. I know it's a little vague, but I didn't follow it that closely.

You can look on Gnome-look.org and Gnome-Art.org, they still have it there, and some of the newer tries at having widgets for Gnome.

They are all nice, flashy, and fairly useful.... but it seems like they lose their appeal after awhile. But it would be nice to have official Gnome Widgets for those who want them.

I never liked screenlets. If I recall, it did funky stuff to my old system.

Conky though. <3. I love Conky.

one of the reasons i don't use gnome is that for everything that I want, I have to install some third party application to do it... and by doing so make the system slower, lose stability, etc, etc...

the good thing in kde is that i dont need to install anything... its all there as part of the system...

Plus conky works the same on all systems so it's not gnome's.
plasma should work on any desktop (just dont add panels and you won't even kown it's kde), conky does have the advantage of not using any toolkits though.

I think:
google gadgets (http://code.google.com/p/google-gadgets-for-linux/) (gtk or qt) [is opensource]
screenlets (http://www.screenlets.org/index.php/Home) (gtk)
gdesklets (http://www.gdesklets.de/) (gtk)
conky (no toolkit)
plasma (qt)
added:
aDesklets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adesklets) (lightweight toolkit, Enlightenment based Imlib2)
cario dock 2 (http://www.cairo-dock.org/) (openGL based, but works with all drivers)
superkaramba (http://utils.kde.org/projects/superkaramba/) (old and has kde dependencies, but will work under gnome)
all work with gnome, try them and see which one does what you want.

ot:

one of the reasons i don't use gnome is that for everything that I want, I have to install some third party application to do it... and by doing so make the system slower, lose stability, etc, etc...
Quite ironic given that you use a unix system. as much as i love KDE because it IS better than GNOME, having separate apps for separate tasks is a good thing.

Do the Cairo Widgets use a lot of resources? Can you not use the dock but use the Widgets still?

This conversation has made me want to start looking into these again.

What is a widget?

They are small applets that sit on your screen, like a clock for example.
