Hi there,
I have Ubuntu 9.4 and Windows XP installed on the same HDD. Can I upgrade from 9.4 to 9.10 without damaging Windows XP? If yes, can I do it with the ISO file I downloaded?

Thanks for your help.

yes, you can upgrade to 9.10 without damaging windows.

you can upgrade using the update manager, or commandline (apt-get, aptitude, etc.)

as for upgrading using an iso, i found this :

Are you sure upgrading from the update manager will not harm Windows XP?

I was using Windows 7 and Jaunty 9.04 in a dual boot situation some months ago. I upgraded Jaunty to Karmic 9.10 in EARLY October - prior to the final release of 9.10 and had problems with shutting down to computer. Had to manually turn it off.
I could still boot into Windows ok and that system would turn off the computer. Also, I had no problems booting into the upgraded Ubuntu system which I must admit was slower than Jaunty. It was that just the shutting down that was not correct and I didn't like that.

Now I have Karmic running by itself and all is well. I installed from an ISO image downloaded from Ubuntu's MAIN site, and burned to a DVD - as I didn't have a blank CD.

Thanks, skyiscrying, but I would really like to know if the Windows partition of my drive will be negatively affected by upgrading Ubuntu from the upgrade manager. The reason I want to know specifically this is because i am really, really cautious of my computer, and I really don't want anything to happen. So you know if I will be allright using the update manager? Thanks.
