I had this problem the first time I installed Ubuntu, and with every dist-upgrade since then. I eventually fix it, but I've never known why it's fixed, and then it gets broken again.

I use a 32" Westinghouse LCD TV as a display, at 720p on an integrated Radeon HD3200 over HDMI. When I first boot after dist-upgrade, it's set to a different resolution, then when I change to 1280x720, it displays but is shifted to the right, so the rightmost 20% of the screen is missing.

Will dist-upgrade save my old xorg config? Is it even my xorg config that's the problem?
