Why do people think all of there hardware is going to work when it is 10 years old.It will not even run xp but they put ubuntu on there old system and all they do is whine and gripe.Have they ever looked at supported hardware? NO!

People just get frustrated, it's not their fault. People really shouldn't expect Ubuntu to work on 10 year old hardware, if they must have an Ubuntu based distribution though they could try Xubuntu and see if that works. It does get annoying though when people post rants about how nothing works. Just research the problem and be done with it.

Apart from the fact that even Shuttleworth says if you have an old PC, put Ubuntu on it?

yeah but did he say 10 year old? probably not. what's that defining line? there isn't one. also, if you're kicking around 10 year old hardware, you need to get your head examined if you think anything new will run flawlessly on it.

Hmmm not really. The old family PC at home runs Hardy and it's ancient.

It is funny though, I'll try some distro on an old box and just laugh in astonishment of some of the crap it recognizes and makes work. I just stare and think, this shouldn't even run anymore. Then I hang on to it longer despite it's overall uselessness.

Sometimes there are oddball things that don't work. The old Broadcom cards are notorious for not working and there's not much anyone can really do about it because the drivers needed to be reverse engineered. I had an old PIII that some kind of soundcard/modem for which there were no drivers either, hence no sound.

In my experience, about 12 y/o hardware is where Xubuntu fails. I've managed to get ubuntu working on most hardware less than 10 years olds. (i.e., on a lot of machines that ran win98 )

Agreed, there are people that could use old pc's but keep in mind that you probably want to totally obliterate your hdd if it's ever had tax records on it, social security numbers or anything else sensitive. At the very least you should write over your whole hd several times.

Well when you get so many people say it will "breathe life into older systems" what do you expect. Also it's not the users fault Linux has no stable driver API.

If one is going to put ubuntu on hardware older than 8 years, I'd likely recommend using the alternate install CD, and kinda building it up from scratch. Lightweight Desktop Manager/Window Maker, and really custom building it, or just using Crunchbang.

A full featured Operating System like Ubuntu can not continue forward if it must keep one foot firmly planted in 1999.

+Any number so large we don't have an English representation for just how large it is.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

That page states the bare minimum, and I have installed on nearly the bare minimum. Ubuntu will run on it, a bit sluggish, but still very usable. If one wants speed on a 300mhz computer, one would run a much lighter distribution.

What about "Breathes lives into old computers"?

What about "Breathes lives into old computers"?
A modern OS that lets one use a windows 98 era pc?
If thats not the definition of "breathes life into old computers", then I have no idea what is.

I would not think it would be fair to ask any full featured distro to support an i486SX, and I think that its more than sufficient to support clear back to a PII/K62 300mhz machine.

Well if you reeeeeally reeeeeeeeally want to make that i486 go zoom, bring a lot of beer, and I'll help, hehe.

When were done with that, we'll get Ubuntu running on an atari 2600.

We wish! And for our next trick, we'll find a way of breathing life into a currently disused and possibly dying 1GB hard drive that I have lying around somewhere, along with an external HDD that I have that effectively died a few months after being dropped. A few gigabytes extra storage space would be useful to me at the moment, but that makes for a separate thread, which will have to wait - I'm off out of the house soon to meet up with Mrs Lisati who has been running a few errands and has some more that she wants us to do together.

I am running XP on a ten year old server I have here, with no issues.

Ah you mean you didn't get the Super Pong Ubuntu Edition when it released back in the 70's?
