Upgrading 9.04 to 9.10

Hello at ubuntu forums. Please can you help me upgrade Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) to Ubuntu 9.10. When I tried to upgrade it, it got this error::(

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
Can not mark 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

I also attached a screenshot and the dist-upgrade logs

Do you think any of the causes apply? Have you installed any software that's not from the repositories, or removed packages from the default installation? Can you post the output of the following command from a Terminal:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

I already had the Ubuntu-Desktop package installed.
Here is the terminal output:

Hi Joshun, I always recommend a fresh install (rather than upgrading). It is just much simpler on so many levels.

I'm not sure what ticklers.org is, but try using one of the official canonical mirrors instead.

Ticklers.org an up to date server according to the launchpad statistics. I have found it faster than the Canonical servers - when the canonical servers are busy I have found them to run a bit slow.

I changed the server to archive.ubuntu.com but it didn't make any difference.

I have not seen this clarified anywhere after searching: has the better result been by using the GUI update manager upgrade button or by downloading the upgrade in terminal?

Both of the terminal and the upgrade-manager gui give exactly the same error message and log: could not mark ubuntu-desktop...

I did have this message and issue after I change my default /usr/bin/python to python3.1 instead of python2.6.

I changed back default to python2.6, problem is gone.

I've tried adjusting the python version but it doesn't make any difference.
