I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and the middle click (pressing down the scroll wheel) on my wireless mouse is not functional any more. xev shows no output on middle click, but pressing both the left and right buttons simultaneously registers as a middle click, and this works as expected for pasting and opening url's in new tabs etc.
By the way, I have tested a wired USB mouse, and it works fine, so this must be related to the use of a wireless mouse. There are a couple of other posts and bug reports floating around, but none seem to have resolved this issue:
