9.04>9.10 openoffice w-p menu problem

Having upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 on my IBM T40, open office 3.1 wordprocessor does not display File, Edit etc menu titles, but only empty boxes shaded with different patterns. Trying Abiword, I find it has menus but won't accept typed characters on a new page. I have reloaded OO wordprocessor to no effect. Any ideas?
