New gdm is too heavy for my old PC moreover if I change default resolution, it asks me to login twice consecutively so, since this operations are very slow with my old pc, I have decided to downgrade gdm to version 2.20:

sudo apt-get install gdm-2.20This operation automatically removed new gdm and installed legacy gdm but now it doesn't start anymore (a black screen is all what I obtain).

So I tried:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdmbut this command seems to run only with newest gdm so I've tried to manually configure /etc/gdm/gdm.conf but here it seems all right.

Anyone able to help me?

P.S.: excuse me for my poor English

hi,

i've had problems with gdm-2.20, too.

i've had good results using SLiM from 9.04, though. downloaded from here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/slim

(SLiM vanished from 9.10 for some reason.)

As reported here

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm-2.20/+bug/475281

the gdm.conf installed by gdm-2.20 is broken, You will need to edit it and replace all references to "/usr/X11R6/bin/X" with "/usr/bin/X"

I also recommend Slim. Using gdm with Xfce is kind of a waste since it pulls in so many Gnome dependencies.

I have no idea why Ubuntu would drop Slim, usually their repos package everything regardless of quality so why drop something actually useful??
