Hi everyone,

I've just tried using gnome shell gnome-shell --replace & and I got stuck with no frames around any windows and no task bar or Applications menu.

I've restarted gnome in a terminal session to get gnome back.

Can anybody tell me what to do to work around this if any of you encountered this?

I encountered the same in compiz a while ago but I had a menu to switch across some displaying options which are non-existent here.

help is very welcome. I can't wait to try it.

Ok. A bit more information.

I've given it a second try. After I closed the terminal (and because I made it an independant process, I did loose all windows frame.)

On the 2nd try I just keep it that way and what I got is a very dark menu. I can' see the time in the centre but I know it's here because when I click on it it shows. The activities menu is not showing either except if I click on it.

In overlay mode, it's all very dark: Applications, Places, Recent Documents are all very dark on even darker background.

I go read my logs see if I can have any clues here.

My laptop is a rather old Sony Vaio.

i think the problem is caused by having compiz effects turned on when trying the "gnome-shell"

try with effects set to "none" in the "appearence" in "system" > "preference"
