View Full Version : [SOLVED] Winxp Missing From Grub

Hello
With Ubuntu 904 and Winxp in the same setup I had no issues.
However, due to a dying motherbaord I just switched it out for a new one.
Because of this I thought it would be an ideal time to reinstall XP and upgrade Ubuntu to 910.

I installed and updated XP yesterday and it went without a hitch.
Just now I installed Ubuntu 910. It is working great and I can get into it just fine. However there is no Grub Menu selection? I just pop right into Ubuntu. I did find a BOOT_INFO SCRIPT file that gave the following information. I suspect all I will need to do is to edit the MENU.LST file or I could try a reinstall of Ubuntu. Suggestions anyone? Thank you all for your help!

Hello
Back again!

I'm thinking that possibly grub was never run or created?
I just ran this and it was blank?

gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

If that's true perhaps I could run something from within Ubuntu to create Grub to figure in bot OS's? Just a thought?

Suggestions? Night for now see you in the morning.

Hello
Back again!
Got it!
Got it!
Got it!

First I was shocked to find out that MENU.LST gad been replaced with a no editing CFG file. However I did get it running from another post I found.

These are the steps I took:
1. Rebooted the computer with the WInxp CD and from the RECOVERY option I ran FIXMBR. With this I was able to get into Winxp.

2. I rebooted again and let Linux install to the 2nd HD.

3. From Ubuntu I ran this:

sudo apt-get install grub2
sudo update-grub2
sudo os-prober

I now have both Ubuntu and Winxp pro in the grub menu!

Good luck...
