Does todays Linux even need a swap partition. I have 1 gig of RAM on my Laptop. Any time I look at memory use the swap partition never seems to be used. Of late because I haven't seen the swap partition used I have 100 MB of swap space set aside, not 1 Gig. The Linux install documentation says to match your swap space with your Ram. It appears that all the programs in Linux today only run in RAM anyways and swap just sits there with no activity.

So , what is the verdict with swap space and todays Linux, is it needed anymore?
