Touch Screen HP laptop

Hi, everyone.

I'm using Karmic on my new HP dv3-2250ep laptop. This laptop uses a Touch Screen, but I can't get it to work at all in Ubuntu.
I've been searching but it seems that there are multiple types of touch screen technology and I don't even know which one this laptop uses.

Can you help me figuring out which hardware is it? Any command that would be helpful?

I don't know if this helps but in Win7 I can use my fingers (no need for pen) to use the touch screen. I also can use 2 fingers to make a zoom action, so I guess it is multi touch.

This thread would be a good place to post all the info. you've collected. It sounds like it has two finger touch (at least) like the new Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch tablets. So I'd guess it uses the same touch screen technology.

Same problem here. I tried to install evtouch, but apparently the hp touchscreen is not evtouch-compatible. Do anyone has an idea what it should be?

It depends on the digitizer that is installed on the HP laptop. The dv3, TX2000 series use the Wacom kernel module and the Wacom driver. The tx2 series uses the hid-ntrig kernel module but is currently using the Wacom driver also. The HP desktops have a NextWindow screen and uses evtouch if I recall correctly.

So if you can let us know which model HP touchscreen you have, we can help point you in a direction.

I have a dv3 laptop. I tried to look at http://www.wacom.com/downloads/drivers.php for a driver, but I didn't find a file for TX2000, as you tell me the hardware is called. I'll greatly appreciate any direction you can give me.

Not a problem, but let's be sure we know what you have. On the bottom of the laptop on the backplate should be the model number. Could you list it (them) exactly. We don't want to steer you to the wrong place. It's just you said brand new and the TX2000 has been out for about a year and a half.

Also in a terminal enter (copy and paste):

Thank you for the output. I found it on French websites and it does look brand new. Did you just buy it? Is it suppose to have a multi-touch touch screen? It doesn't look like it has a swivel hinge to convert it into a tablet pc. Or does it?

Wacom is not showing up on the output. It may be because it is so new that the Karmic default linuxwacom drivers do not support it yet. Check in Synaptic Package manager and see if both packages are installed: wacom-tools & xserver-xorg-input-wacom

We also need to take a look at your lshal. In a terminal enter:

lshal>nerdiest_lshal.txt
Then right click on it and compress it using Create Archive. Then attach it to your next post using Manage Attachments.

Yes, it's a brand new computer: I bought it today and it toke me a lot of time putting the correct video card drivers (to enable compiz) and the same for the sound card. But now all these just work perfectly (but no, it doesn't turn into tablet).

We just set up the first one about a week ago. Here is the thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1314869). Basically because it is so new you have to use the newest developmental linuxwacom driver which is 0.8.5-4. New multi-touch gestures were just added to 5-4. You'll need to compile it and a .fdi for it. I can write a new .fdi for you now.

So look through the thread and see what you need to do. It looks more complicated than it is because there is a lot of explanation. But actually not that many steps. Ask if you have questions.

I have a similar problem with my touch screen, can you take a look at my /proc/??/??/??

Background:
I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 from a CD to a Samsung Q1Ultra (aka UMPC). The initial MINI Root boot up from the CD and the pressure mouse integrated into the system work, but after a hardware scan and try to do the hard drive install, I lost the mouse. So, my work around is to install Ubuntu 9.04 using text mode and apt-get x-windows and KDE desktop package. I have to use a USB mouse. But if I can get the touch screen going, than I can work and troubleshoot a little better, because the system is not 100% working right yet. In the back of my Samsung Q1Ultra doesn't have any info on what mode of the touch screen. Here is the file I capture. Please take a look at it and let me know if you can tell me what else need to be loaded to make the touch screen work for me....thanks.

I think it's the .fdi you are using. It's not quite right. You did change 'if1' to 'if0' for touch but you should delete the 'if0' with the stylus and eraser. Which is why HAL isn't being configured.

Would you do me a favor and try the new generic .fdi here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8367378&postcount=579)? It should work for you, and hopefully most everyone. Just replace the current 10-linuxwacom.fdi with it.

Are you sure you compiled and installed linuxwacom 0.8.5-4 and not 0.8.4-4?

Is the wacom.ko auto-loading?:

About lsmod | grep wacom: nope, it returns nothing. In my /etc/modules file I have tried putting simply wacom.ko, but also putting the whole path to it.

It's possible something in the compile didn't go right. Some folks in Karmic say they need to add:

apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-all
after the purge line. I'm not sure about that. It may be a new dependency?

The other thought is that you have another wacom.fdi accidentally installed. That will mess it up for you too.

I try to start wacomcpl. When I start it, I see a panel on the left "Select the Device" with no devices listed. When I tried to install xserver-xorg-input-all as you adviced me, I've got a message that the package is already installed. What's bothering me is that there is nothing about the touchscreen in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Should I put something or should it be there only by virtue of the compilation/installation process? With Jaunty and Karmic you don't need any Wacom stuff in xorg.conf. You didn't do:

sudo apt-get install libhal-dev
So hal-setup-wacom wasn't built. That probably doesn't matter. You also didn't do the purge lines, which may matter. A version conflict could cause the symptoms you have.

My main concern is you didn't show yourself doing the wacom.ko copy command:

sudo cp ./src/2.6.28/wacom.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/input/tablet/wacom.ko
You definitely need the wacom.ko you compiled in place.

I was following you step by step but I downloaded linuxwacom-0.8.5-5 ..
I haven't edited the .fdi file yet, should I add the tags that Favux posted to the original file or create a new one with that?

Welcome to Ubuntu Forums!

Make a back up of the default 10-linuxwacom.fdi (assuming you're in Karmic).

Then replace it with the .fdi you want to use, still named 10-linuxwacom.fdi. You want to use only one wacom.fdi at a time.

Sure, why not. The only part of the .fdi that applies to a usb wacom digitizer like you have is:

Hi i_ReEm,

Did you reboot? If you now only have one 10-linuxwacom.fdi and the contents are as above your touch should now be working. Since it isn't we have to now figure out why it isn't.

In a terminal enter:

xinput --list
and let's look at the output. Also let's look at your Xorg.0.log located in "/var/log/". Given that you have compiled and installed linuxwacom 0.8.5-5 to see if the linuxwacom usb kernel driver/module is loading enter:

lsmod | grep wacom

We'll also want to look at your lshal, so in a terminal:

lshal>lshal.txt
That will place a file called lshal.txt in your "/home/yourusername/" directory. Right click on it and compress it with Create Archive and attach it to your next post with Manage Attachments.

Good, the kernel module is auto-loading. Both the xinput and lshal show the Synaptic Touchpad driver is grabbing your Wacom touchpad. The lshal shows:

Well I guess there's a few ways. Navigate to it in Places (Nautilus) and double click on it. That will open it in Text Editor (gedit). Right click on it and choose select all. Place it in (paste) a New file/tab in gedit. Save it as say i_ReEm_Xorg.0.log.txt to your Desktop. Then right click on the new file on your desktop and compress it with Create Archive. Then attach to your next post with Manage Attachments.

The 0.8.5 series linuxwacom should recognize your tablet. That's why we're using it. Is there a bug in 0.8.5-5 that accidentally dropped the E2? Or some problem with your compile?

Anyway let's try in a terminal:

xsetwacom set touch touch on
and see if that turns touch on for you. And if that doesn't work maybe:

xsetwacom set touch Gesture on

(when I tried the last 2 commands a few days ago then rebooted nothing happened, but today I tried them and I got the following error:

Did you get a kernel update recently? That breaks the linuxwacom compile and you have to redo it. Linuxwacom is up to 0.8.5-7 now. I suggest you compile and install the new version using the HOW TO (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6546012&postcount=1). Then let's see where you are. Remember to back up any wacom.fdi you want to keep because the HOW TO will probably remove it.

I have the same laptop as i_ReEm, but in my case,

lsmod | grep wacom

does not show anything** like the author of this thread :/

And the term "Wacom" is not in the XOrg.0.log file.

OK, did you compile linuxwacom 0.5.8-8? If so then you should just need a .fdi. The rc2 .fdi is attached to the bottom of this HOW TO (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6546012&postcount=1) along with instructions in Section 2 b).

OK, so you have the usb wacom.ko loading so there should be usb communication and you see it in dmesg. I assume "xinput --list" and "xsetwacom list" don't show your tablet.

We'll have to look at your lshal and then maybe your Xorg.0.log. For the lshal in a terminal:

Right click on it and compress it with Create Archive. Attach it to your next post with Manage Attachments.

The lshal looks OK, but the Xorg.0.log shows that the Synaptic Touchpad .fdi tries to grab your touchscreen but then drops it. Then wacom tries to get it and also rejects it. Which is why it doesn't show up in xinput.

Maybe the "fixes" since 0.8.5-4 for the E2 and other things have actually broken things?

Let's try to clear out one variable by fixing the Synaptic .fdi so it isn't so grabby. See post #22 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8372380&postcount=22).

Then if it isn't working the Xorg.0.log again.

EDIT: .. but there are some tricks that were nice on windows 7 like scrolling by dragging white space in a page instead of using the scroll bar, because the laptop is multi-touch and does not include a stylus for precise selection and the scroll bar is very small. But if it's not possible, that's ok, amazing job so far. Thank you again :)

The 0.8.5 series is suppose to support that: "Support suspend/resume for kernel 2.6.26 and later." in the release notes. So I don't know what to say. Have you tried restarting X instead of rebooting?

Not sure how much changed for your tablet. But probably worth a try. Maybe the kernel changes mentioned improved suspend/resume.

What about right clicking? In windows, right clicking is done by a long press.
That, like the touch gestures, would be a feature request you would make at the LWP site. Remember it's still early days for support for your multi-touch screen.

You could try the work a round the TX2500's use. They add "i8042.reset" (without the quotes of course) to the kernel boot line. Instructions on this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1217745).

Touch is coming along. Between Jason and Chris, provided it gets in, 0.8.5-11 should have some improvements for you. Due out in two to three weeks.

I would like to share with you my feed back:
- Hardware: HP Pavilion tx2550ee
- OS: Linux Mint 8, running from 8G USB memory stick
- wacom input driver 0.8.4.1-Oubuntu4 was installed during Mint 8 installation on USB stick
- Stylus worked fine out of the box, I didn't need to calibrate it
- Touch did not work at all
- I installed wacom-tools 0.8.4.1-Oubuntu4 and wacom control panel didn't show any device to select
- I replaced 10-linuxwacom.fdi with Favux new-generic rc2 10-linuxqacom.fdi, and it worked fine and when running wacom control panel I could see touch, stylus, pad and eraser
- After resuming from suspend touch and stylus are working normally, hibernate does not work, I think because Mint is running from USB stick

Now I need to figure out how to auto-rotate the display or at least activate rotate button like the way in Win7 instead of going through display menu to rotate.

Im assuming you are right handed so this script will rotate the orientation to the right and upside down.

Now you need to assign the Rotation file to a key of your choice.

did not work and instead I used: ./home/my username/Rotation

then I assigned Rotation file to a key, now I can rotate my display to any orientation by one press of kay from my keyboard.

It does, but it lacks multi-touch features for my capacitive screen :/

Windows Seven is wayyy ahead in supporting touch screens in general; first thing I miss is kinetic scrolling! Which is much easier than using the scrollbar because touch isn't very easy on the borders. Hope you ubuntu guys can do something to beat them :)

I used to be able to scroll a page using multitouch on karmic with linuxwacom, now multitouch scrolling is not working on a stock lucid (I did a clean install of lucid).
