things on here are seriously screwed up. sorry if this is really confusing but here it goes:
first, a number of packages seem to have gone missing. Nautilus for one. I apt-get installed it hoping that would fix the missing desktop/menu icons, missing window boarders, etc but I only know how to launch it from a commandline. This made the desktop icons appear, but dragging/shuffling/minimizing windows is still broken, so I have to close the command window to access any window underneath, thus ending nautilus. Terminal is gone too. installing it was unsuccessful. I installed a program called powershell, which I was able to launch with gnome-do and that gave me a command line to use.
I cannot activate the nvidia drivers (173 or 180) from the hardware drivers app. they seem to download and install but will not stay selected.
Audio will not work either. before upgrade I think ALSA was used and default but it does not work now. I get a test tone from OSS in the config app but nothing else seems to be able to play sound.

things on here are seriously screwed up. sorry if this is really confusing but here it goes:

It would be worth download and making a cdrom of the 9.10 and then booting of the CDrom to see if you have the same issues. It may be that you have previously installed something which is not quite standard which is creating some conflicts.

Have you tried (in a terminal) running:

sudo apt-get -f install

to see if there are any issues.. which might then be fixed.

If it boots of the CDRom okay then I would advice backing up your important documents etc and doing a clean install.
