I get the black screen during boot after upgrading to 9.10 (or sometimes garbled multi colored nonsense), and after reading a number of threads here I'm sure the culprit is my nVidia GeForce 8600M GT card (Dell XPS M1530 laptop). However, as a relative newbie to Ubuntu and Linux in general, I'm at a loss what to do...

I can boot kernel 2.6.27-9-generic in recovery mode. Here I get

Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.27-9-generic
* nvidia (185.18.36)...
...fail!

Running dkms status I get:

nvidia, 185.18.36, 2.6.31-14-generic, i686: installed

At this point I'm lost. If anyone can explain to me, in layman's terms, how to proceed, I would be deeply grateful.
If I need to provide more information, just tell me what to do.

Currently I reduced to writing this on a Windows PC. Clearly unacceptable! ;)
