Hello,

I thought xubuntu was maintained by Canonical but from looking at the website I can see that's not the case:

http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/derivatives

It would appear that critical updates for the xubuntu desktop will not be done by Canonical, correct?

I would like to know why this is not support and how is quality and security handled?

Is it better to just use ubuntu since it's officially support?

Kubuntu is officially supported by Canonical according to the above link.

Cheers, Nick

Well, it is not a "official derivative" but it is a "recognized derivative". If you go to the Xubuntu website, you'll see that it is registered by Canonical. So, by this logic, it is maintained by Canonical.

If you go to this link, you get a confirmation of that fact:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DerivativeTeam/Derivatives

You'll see that:

Canonical sponsored derivatives are created and maintained by Canonical and the Ubuntu community. All Quality Assurance and Governance is managed by Ubuntu.

In which Xubuntu is a part of that list.

Ubuntu and Xubuntu are the same distribution! They get exactly the same updates to all of the important packages. The only reason that one is "officially" supported is that Canonical makes the decision about what goes on the default installation.

It really doesn't matter.
