Well, I have been tinkering with 9.04 on my old WinXP machine for a week or so while awaiting 9.10. I had some extreme difficulty trying to get things working with my CDROM/DVD-RW (six month old LGE Super Multi DVD Rewriter GH20). I was able to finally get things working in 9.04 through perseverance and Google-Mastery.

The two main problems and three resulting 'work-arounds' I used:

1. Install from CD would hang, once installed from USB Thumbdrive system would hang whenever CD/DVD inserted.

Add all_generic_ide to boot options

2. After being able to read discs, attempting to burn disc would lock system

Removed Brasero
Add CDR_NODMATEST environment variable

I think both problems are due to my system having four SATA HDD and an IDE CD. It was quite usable for a few days while I installed a few packages and kicked the tires a bit.

Then I went through the upgrade this evening and am now back to square one. Even with the 'all_generic_ide' boot option, system hangs whenever a disc is inserted.

Any thoughts on where I can look next?
