9.10 install using all sys resouces - not installing

When I booted my computer this morning, the update manager came on with updates to Ubuntu. It seems like there have been many such updates lately, so I clicked for the install. It appeared to download a huge amount of data, when it was over, there was a note saying it would take 3.22 hours to install. When I saw that message, I DID NOT agree to an install.s I wanted to check the forums to see what it was and why it would take so much time. I went searching the forums and IRC - (a complete waste of time. No intelligent response - was told to get a cable connection and use a different language for ubuntu.)
My system began running slow and the sys monitor showed all 4 cores running at 56% up to 83% yet I can not find what is happening or when it will finish. It's been more than 4 hours now and it is still sucking resourses like crazy. Not on network - just on my system.
Of course then I found many forum posts about it breaking apps and to not install it over my current ver. 9.04 and more.
I have only been using Ubuntu for about 4 months and have not fully examined its nooks and crannys.
From what I can learn, the 9.10 can not be stopped and it busily overwriting all my data.
Right now it's using 98% of the 4 Gigs of memory and 35% of the 4 gig swap file.
I am concerned.
My system
AMD 4xCPU 9850
64 bit Ubuntu 9.04 (!?)
640 G Hard Drive
Qwest DSL 3-5 mbps

It SEEMS like you have selected 'upgrade'

As for over-writing ... is not a problem, 9.10 upgraded happily onto my 9.04

Be patient, it should do it.

Do you know where I can see the progress bar? I can't find it and my sys monitor only shows 2 processes running:

Also, the download manager does not show that I have d/l Ubuntu.
Is that common?

I would suggest you open a terminal and run top to see what is using all your resources. The mirrors are pretty slow right now, that is the reason why it is taking so long.

I am now at hour 7 on this mofo. I do not beleive it is doing anything productive. ie. installing. Can I just get the hell outta here w/o losing data?
