View Full Version : I just made Google Chrome my default web browser!

I just made Google Chrome my default web browser!

The progression has been gradual, we are fortunate to have 3 great web browsers to choose from: Opera, Firefox, and Google Chrome.

I honestly have not used Opera in a while but still find it is a great web browser. Lately, I have found myself using Google Chrome over Firefox for at least a couple of months now.

While I will always love Firefox, Google Chrome surpasses Firefox in speed, ease of use and with the built in default settings I do not miss any Firefox add-ons. Having themes available for Google Chrome is icing on the cake.

Will I occasionally use Firefox again?...of course and on a rare occasion even Opera but Google Chrome has become my first choice for a Web Browser.

Have you made the switch yet from Firefox, Opera or other web browsers to making Google Chrome/Chromium your default web browser?

EDIT:
The fact that you can use both AdBlock Plus and FlashBlock flawlessly in the latest Google Chrome/Chromium should be a winning feature for most people!

AdBlock Plus works flawlessly in Google Chrome/Chromium for me

I do use Chrome as my everyday browser, however I have Epiphany set as the default. For some reason I just like having a different browser to open up links from the OS than the browser that I'm currently using.

other than the first listed here:

i don't see what the big deal is. a "timestamp" when it was installed? whoopdeefriggindoo. people cry about that?

and speed is still a convincing argument. chrome does feel faster to me than ff even with a new kubuntu install yesterday.

I've never tried Chrome. I know that Google already knows everything about me, probably including my name, birth date, blood type and social security number, but I still have a hard time believing they aren't using that browser to spy on me.

I tried Chrome for a couple of weeks. I really liked its speed, but its inability to block ads as well as Firefox really kind of killed it for me. While using Chrome I was blocking ads by editing my hosts file which worked but not nearly as well as Adblock Plus. When/if Chrome gets an addon that functions as well as Adblock Plus I'll seriously consider using it as my everyday browser.

I tried it on a Mac, didn't particularly like it and went back to Firefox on that machine.

For my own computer, I've been using Midori for a while, since most of the major problems got solved, because it is very lightweight and fast.

It won't get an ad-blocker as good as Adblock Plus. Internet advertising is the core of Google's business, so they aren't about to give their users a method of blocking that business. Plus, whilst I do use their products, i.e search and Google Earth, I am deeply suspicious of them as a company. As already, by others, said I am sure they are using that browser to spy on people.

Google Chrome is just the stable version to Chromium...

Saying that, I've installed chromium, but I hardly use it, since it takes up a lot more memory than it's supposed to.. and runs with a slightly elevated cpu usage.

I've been using Google Chrome as my default browser for the past month, it's great. I had a few issues regarding privacy as well before I decided to use it full time but I found this helpful.

- If you’re just surfing around the web and clicking on links, that information does not go to google.com.

- If you are typing a search or url in the address bar, Google Chrome will talk to the current search service to try to offer useful query/url suggestions. I love this feature, but you can turn it off. Right-click in the Omnibox/address bar and choose “Edit search engines…”. Or click the Chrome menu (it looks like a wrench), then Options->Basics and then the “Manage” button.

- By default, crash reports and other anonymous usage statistics (e.g. which features are used most often) are not sent to Google. The Chrome team would love if people opted-in to send crash report data though, because it would improve Chrome for everyone. To opt in, click on the Chrome menu (it looks like a wrench), then click “Options.” On the “Under the Hood” tab, check the box that says “Help make Google Chrome better by automatically sending usage statistics and crash reports to Google.” You can read more about this opt-in option on this support page.

- I believe if Google Chrome sees a very short, stock 404 page (less than 512 bytes), it talks to Google in order to try to suggest other possible pages and options. My understanding that this is the same underlying technology that I talked about earlier this year. I think if you have a helpful 404 page (> 512 bytes), Google Chrome doesn’t modify that (this 404 page isn’t changed for example), but Google Chrome does try to help with very short/unhelpful 404 pages. If you still don’t like this feature, you can turn it off. Go to Chrome/Wrench menu->Options->Under the Hood and uncheck the box that says “Show suggestions for navigation errors.”

By the way, just as a quick plug: if you as a site owner want to improve your 404 pages, Google offers a nice snippet of JavaScript (well under 20 lines) to offer this functionality to site owners. See this 404 page blog post for more info.

- Google Chrome checks for automatic updates every 25 hours. Other modern browsers check for updates as well, e.g. to plug security holes. Given today’s sometimes-hostile web, I think checking for updates like this is a very smart choice.

- Every 30 minutes, Google Chrome downloads a list of 32-bit url hashes of urls thought to be dangerous (malware or phishing). That is a download of data from google.com, not to google.com. As you surf around the web, if you happen to hit a url whose hash is in the dangerous list, the 32-bit hash is sent to Google and Google replies with a full 256-bit hash of the dangerous url in question. Not only does this happen very rarely, but Google Chrome doesn’t send a url to Google, it sends a url hash, so Google doesn’t learn the url from this exchange. By the way, this is essentially the same protocol that Firefox 3 uses to protect its users from malware/phishing urls as well.

Update, September 5th 2008: A friend pointed me to this nice public description of Google’s Safe Browsing protocol in case you’re interested in more details.

- When you choose your language in the user interface, Google Chrome downloads a spellcheck dictionary. Again, that is a download of data from google.com, not to google.com.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the only communication that happens between Google Chrome and google.com. I thought it would be better to write down all the communication that happens so that people wouldn’t invent conspiracy theories. As Louis Brandeis said, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.” Luckily, you can double-check me because the browser is open-source. I hope this helps in case anyone has any privacy-related questions about Google Chrome.

chromium was already my default browser in jaunty.. firefox was really slow for me (but it was really fast after a clean install (still not as fast as chromium though))

I switched over to 64bit chromium since i switched from 32bit jaunty to 64bit karmic.. anyway, anyone else having problems with 64bit chromium not finishing the peacekeeper benchmark and stopping at the javascript portion? ... i mean javascript? c'mon, chromium! (or the problem is completely on my end)

Well, if someone has issues with Google, but still wants a fast webkit based browser, there is always Midori (http://twotoasts.de/index.php?/pages/midori_summary.html). :) I use it on one of my machines and it is just as fast (and has a built-in adblocker that uses the same lists as Adblock Plus). Should be in the repository.

Well I just installed Google Chrome today from the dev channel and I must say I am quite impressed. It surfs with blazing speed and does flash sites faster than firefox. I tested this using a web site that loaded in Firefox and Google Chrome ate it up and loaded it two times as fast. Also I have noticed that You Tube plays snappier in Chrome as well. However they say that the speed difference is not much, but on some slower loading Firefox pages, Google does load them faster, at least in my experience.

It is not a bank issue. It is client side scripting being used on websites can be easily manipulated by malicious codes and you'll be redirected to fake one and steal your online account details.

Hence, the need of no-script which stop such scripts in first place.

This has probably been answered somewhere, but I can't find it. Sorry if so.

I'm running 64-bit Karmic Ubuntu. I love Google Chrome, which I switched to from the daily build Chromium as I don't need quite as bleeding-edge as daily builds.

I'd like to run real 64-bit Flash in Chromium, and leave my Firefox alone. I almost never use Firefox, but for some reason various things seem to work in one browser but not the other.

I have the Adobe download of the latest 64-bit libflashplayer.so file, but I don't know where it should go. I can't find any spot where Chrome stores it's plugins. There is no plugins directory that's an obvious place to put this file, in other words.

Can anyone point me to a thread, or just tell me the directory name?

Thanks much!!

Doesn't that mean it's still running 32-bit in the wrapper?

Once it has NoScript and finer cookie management, I'll be sold.

Actually, if Midori or Arora pick up those things first, one of them will be my default browser.

chromium is a game. So, sudo apt-get remove chromium won't work to get rid of chromium-browser.

Remember to do sudo apt-get purge packagename when you want ALL TRACES of it removed.

it's not as versatile or feature rich as Firefox though, Chrome just doesn't fulfill my needs...

I use the web developement plug, greasemonkey, ect.

and yeah, when Chrome came out, it was faster.... but Firefox 3.5 is pretty much just as fast, debatably a little slower with JS.... but I've been using 3.6 Beta.... and it's noticeable faster than 3.5

Firefox for me, and that won't be changing anytime soon.

Chrome is quick, in Linux and Windows, but Firefox is faster for me, in operation anyway, admitantly, it does take longer to start up. But once I open Firefox, I don't close it, and, due to my slow connection, I can really feel the difference between the two, especially in Windows, when Chrome seems to crawl. Chrome has a nice interface, buts its nothing Opera or Safari didn't already have, and Firefox 3.5 looks really good. Addons are essential for me too, I like to be able to operate in one window as much as possible, so being able to do a lot of things in Firefox at once is a big plus.

My one gripe with Firefox 3.5 in Jaunty is that its branded as Shiretoko. Anyone know how to get good ol' "Firefox" back?

I downloaded chrome for linux and I love it, so fast, such a great minimal design.. but it's pretty buggy still, a few times i wasn't able to click on anything or it would refuse to close etc. etc.
And of course i missed my add-ons.. but all the add-ons most of us use are very popular ones and by this time next year they'll all be available for chrome.
Then again maybe by this time next year firefox will have released something capable of competing with chrome for speeds, and with the option to make the interface smaller.

Still the linux bugs are the only issue, it's my default on Windows now. . . but now i've got the internet working in Ubuntu I've no reason to go near windows.
