Well it's not November where I am but it is for New Zealand and parts of Russia so I thought I'd make this thread

Rules:

1. Stay within the board rules, no matter how hot you may believe the wallpaper/screen shot to be.
2. If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.
3. Off Topic Posts will be edited or removed.
4. The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post explicit or suggestive, and provocative images (they must be safe for your kids and/or boss to see). Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.
5. The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Rule set.
6. Please use reduced-size thumbnails, where possible, out of respect for people running on lower bandwidth or screen resolutions.
7. To avoid having users having to ask you for them. we request that you format your posts in the following order:

Themes: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Wallpaper: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Icons: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Programs: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Important Note: Any image posted that is over 800 x 600 will be removed! Use a thumbnail or use a text link to your image. If your image is removed, this is why.

Lithium is getting some more teeny tweaks; I'm trying to figure how to get that nice 1px border on the Nautilus sidebar without getting it on panel applet handles. Pain in the bum.

I GOT MY WOBBLY WINDOWS BACK!!! Woo-hoooo!

I've been a bit lonely without them since I switched to Crunchbang Lite, but I've switched now from Openbox to Compiz standalone, and I love it...It's all my eye-candy without clunky Gnome behind it :D

Anyway, here's what my desktop looks like now...

GTK: Espresso
Windows: Dark Roast Emerald Theme
Icons: Gnome Dust

Stock KDE wallpaper (I think?) and the same ol' Conky.

I'm also running Compiz-Deskmenu...I got used to the right-click menu in Openbox :)

Only thing I don't like is that it seems to be a bit buggy with Chromium...Sometimes it starts flashing randomly :S And why hasn't it got a shadow?!

One image is framebuffer, one X.
Not doing anything in particular in either screenshot, just semi-random commands to give an illusion of business.

Playing around with Lithium at the moment. For some reason I just can't QUITE get it to all fit together right, not sure why. But it's a hell of a theme regardless, I just need to get it all together.

Conky Widgets by londonali1010 (2009)

This script is meant to be a "shell" to hold a suite of widgets for use in Conky.

To configure:
+ Copy the widget's code block (will be framed by --(( WIDGET NAME )) and --(( END WIDGET NAME )), with "[" instead of "(") somewhere between "require 'cairo'" and "function conky_widgets()", ensuring not to paste into another widget's code block
+ To call the widget, add the following just before the last "end" of the entire script:
cr = cairo_create(cs)
NAME_OF_FUNCTION(cr, OPTIONS)
cairo_destroy(cr)
+ Replace OPTIONS with the options for your widget (should be specified in the widget's code block)

Call this script in Conky using the following before TEXT (assuming you save this script to ~/scripts/conky_widgets.lua):
lua_load ~/scripts/conky_widgets.lua
lua_draw_hook_pre widgets

Looks great.

Lithium is getting some more teeny tweaks; I'm trying to figure how to get that nice 1px border on the Nautilus sidebar without getting it on panel applet handles. Pain in the bum.

Nice setup, S&M :)

Do you know if anyone's ported Token icons to a Gnome icon theme?

Decided to keep things simple this month :)

Just finished hacking the "notify-osd" source so that I can use my custom fonts. It really irritates me how I have to go to this extent just to change the font; something which should be configurable anyway. One of the things that makes Linux so awesome is that you can configure almost anything you want, so it strikes me as odd that making notify-osd configurable isn't top priority.

Also there appears to be a bug (not caused by me... It was like that before :P) because the bubble is oddly low on the screen (see screenshot)

Ooooh, I like your wallpaper...It's what I imagined Bella & Edward's clearing to look like in Twilight :)

I'm not 13, I swear :)

And my Conky Widgets script:

--[[
Conky Widgets by londonali1010 (2009)

This script is meant to be a "shell" to hold a suite of widgets for use in Conky.

To configure:
+ Copy the widget's code block (will be framed by --(( WIDGET NAME )) and --(( END WIDGET NAME )), with "[" instead of "(") somewhere between "require 'cairo'" and "function conky_widgets()", ensuring not to paste into another widget's code block
+ To call the widget, add the following just before the last "end" of the entire script:
cr = cairo_create(cs)
NAME_OF_FUNCTION(cr, OPTIONS)
cairo_destroy(cr)
+ Replace OPTIONS with the options for your widget (should be specified in the widget's code block)

Call this script in Conky using the following before TEXT (assuming you save this script to ~/scripts/conky_widgets.lua):
lua_load ~/scripts/conky_widgets.lua
lua_draw_hook_pre widgets

You might be asking of the appli, places, sys those text ?
You can do that by removing MENU BAR and put MAIN MENU by right clicking the taskbar and go to "add to panels" option?

Press alt+F1 to get "Main Menu" (keyboard shortcut!) :)

I love that background.

Nothing too special, just installed/used. I usually have mpd running which adds about 5 MB, but with it being a fresh install I have no music and no mpd installed.

Back when I used awesome 2.4 I could start X w/mpd running and be using 28 MB RAM. Of course, at that time I had put a lot of work into making things light.

edit:
also I'm fairly sure the 9.2% means of total available physical memory (I don't have much)

Tried to do a big more with Conky this month. Turns out an orangish background is tough to work with, on whether the text should be black/dark or white/light.

Does anyone know of conky working with rtorrent, mutt, and/or mocp? Just curious since they are terminal based. I don't know jack to write any sort of script or interface myself.

Crunchbang 9.04.

[Edit]

Well, the mocp was easy to figure out once i did some googling. It's nothing fancy, but it works. As for mutt, I assume i'd be able to just use some sort of gmail script and that would work just as well.

The tough one seems to be rtorrent. I found some documentation for it, but it seems to be a fairly difficult process to a novice like myself.

Which media player is that, guys and girls?
The player is Amarok as Muppeteer noted, and the widget is a one off superkaramba creation.

<snip>
I don't ever look at window titles either and I have a compulsive desire to just get rid of window decorations completely (I even have a shortcut set up to disable them for the active window). They're mostly just wasted space as far as I'm concerned. However, having the title bar on the side seems much nicer. About bespin, it definitely doesn't have the most intuitive configuration.

@Muppeteer, could you link that wallpaper, please?

Crunchbang can look as good as anyone's machine, I'd wager! For evidence, check out arpinux or Sarai the Geek's setups.

Also, I just started running Compiz standalone on my Crunchbang, and actually, it looks exactly the same now as when I was running Gnome :)

Ya Sarai's last month was beautiful :) I just havn't figured out how to yet ;)

I tried that tonight, but alas, Compiz doesn't want to play nice with this SIS graphics chip :( So Openbox themes it is for me :) Though, I'm thinking of giving JWM a try :)

Learning to have some fun with Conky - I haven't used it in a long time and there's a lot to learn, so I'm just tweaking the conky widget scripts to see what I can do at this point - I pretty much stole everything here.

The half-circles are a calendar (decoded in the second screenshot). It's not very useful but I usually know what day it is anyway. I have one sitting on my windowsill that works the same way, except with beads.

Otherwise, stock Karmic themes except for a 1px metacity border that I also stole. This is kind of a work in progress - I don't like the Human gtk without the Human metacity.

As others have said, Xubuntu actually has quite an acceptable theme this time round. Though mine is actually just ubuntu xfce, and using the art packages. Oh, this is my laptop, the one you never see since I usually use my desktop or netbook..

http://omploader.org/tMm9kZQ (http://omploader.org/vMm9kZQ)

http://omploader.org/tMm9kZw (http://omploader.org/vMm9kZw)

Gtk: Albatross (Default xubuntu)
Wallpaper: Default Xubuntu
Xfwm: Shiki
Icons: Eikon

Personally, the gtk seems to be missing something, dark menus are nice, coloured scrollbars are nice, but the frameis just plain ol grey. :( Otherwise it'll really be a darn good theme. I'm also trying to avoid using my two stables (Elegant Brit and friends, or Kupo Finale..)

Also, does anyone know where to get the Xubuntu Jaunty,...errm blue forest wallpaper? I remember it using used in places for promotion, but Xubuntu Jaunty wallpaper was the blue mouse background. Thanks.

You say you remove unnecessary junk then claim it isn't bloated. I hope you realize this sounds silly...

You're right....I shouldn't have said that on its own. I should have also said that after doing the same with Gnome, I still found that it used up more than 70 MB EXTRA, when compared to XFCE.

...Also, 92.8 MB RAM used on startup isn't great. I use 77 even after starting firefox.

Good for you, goodsir.

Anyways, this isn't the thread to be debating minimal-ness...this thread is the exact opposite.

I agree..That's one of the things I didn't like about KDE! It's alright if you have a big screen where nothing's maximised, but on a tiny screen like mine, it's a little weird when you have a maximised, opaque window butted up against a glossy, transparent panel :( I solved it by running Compiz/Emerald in KDE and creating an Emerald theme to match my plasmoids, but it still just wasn't quite right...

I disagree with you both, the desktop is no longer a special folder for me, why should it look like my window manager? I rather like the clear distinction between the shell and my applications, when I could be running plasma themes like atelier or aya, that inherit my color scheme.

It's called inconsistancy. If you really feel like that, why not just make the entire window black and the Plasmoids white. That's a clear distiction.

One could just as easily ask you why you don't just make everything the same color, including the text, if you're concerned about inconsistency, but then that person might be accused of engaging in hyperbole.

Staying consistant just means staying on the same track. Don't go off and work on your Math and then end up with English.

Understand where I'm coming from?

I disagree with you both, the desktop is no longer a special folder for me, why should it look like my window manager? I rather like the clear distinction between the shell and my applications, when I could be running plasma themes like atelier or aya, that inherit my color scheme.

Utterly agree.

i agree with islington...stylistic inconsistency is a type of style...
for example you have a room with just white modern square furniture, so you can use an old cupboard as a highlight
or you have all windows in the same look, but your desk style has a complete other style

For a start I rather upload for you my fluxbox startup file,menu,init,gtk-2.0rc,etc.,all is more important and helping:
You'll like it more and more later when you'll set it up all as you like.

True, they're not consistant, but perhaps the better point is that they don't have to be....This whole thread is a thing of personal preference. Half my setups aren't consistant, but to me they look good. I like how his looked, it works well in my opinion. Windows should be bold, outstanding. Panels should be blend into the background. You're never going to do any work on them, so you don't have to concentrate on them. So they can blend :)

I have this in my rc.xml (right above </ applications> )

<application class="XTerm">

You also need to retain the border on undecorated windows (this is around line 50 in the default rc.xml):

I can't help but keep things simple. Tried adding a conky, but that failed (don't ask why, it's not conky's fault). Tried using a panel but it takes up too much room to look good.
