I am new to linux . I have old sony vaio bought in 2000. I tried installing Ubuntu from CD but it fails towards end. It passes CD checks. I tried multiple CDs but same result. I am not sure there is issue with my CD hardware. It has USB connector. Is it possible to install Ubuntu from memory stick or external hard drive. Is there a distribution that will install minimal OS just to get started.

Any help would be appreciated

Yes you can, but, why not check your cd to make sure it is okay ?

Rule #1 Burn at 4X speed
Rule #2 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

For using a usb stick, you need to see if your BIOS supports usb booting.

then, head over this way ---> http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-from-usb-stick.html

It's well written and should get you going :D

I think Ubuntu is gonna be horrible on a Laptop from 2000, I would try something like Puppy Linux. It's only 80mb, very light and fast and pretty complete. Things aren't as easy as they are on Ubuntu, but I managed to get it working with no Linux experience on a 15 year old pc too.

One thing, is your laptop capable of booting from an usb drive? I think it isn't. Burning a puppy cd is a better idea.

You could try any linux distro, they can all be made lightweight and ready for old hardware. Maybe you can burn Ubuntu alternate and install it.

Recommended lightweight Desktop Environments (basically every graphical toolbar or start button you see):

-LXDE
-Fluxbox

Good luck, if you need any help, just ask it :)
