My desktop overheated due to poor airflow and crashed during the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. After booting, the system hangs before showing the gnome desktop. I have an old 8.x disc and could burn a new Ubuntu disc. What's the best way to rescue the system and continue the upgrade?

you can rescue your system with live CD or pendrive using chroot
you can follow http://alok.fossguru.in/content/rescuing-system-chroot

in step 7 run the command dpkg configure -a
