Installing VLC

hi!
I've installed vlc but can't play anything when I'm logged in as root. I get message telling me to make make some configuration which I don't understand. How do I go about?

Why on Earth are you logged in as root? You never, ever need to log in as root. And why are you trying to run VLC as root? VLC - at least the version of VLC from the repositories - runs just fine as an ordinary user. Perhaps you could clarify. And what was the message?

1. Why are you logging in as root? (security issues)

2. What is the message. Just post it here in the forums.
