If I use:

upgrade-manager -d

Will that just upgrade my Ubuntu and dual boot?

Yes, but if you are not already using Grub 2 you may have to jump through some hoops...

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

and yes your dual boot should remain intact, (see link above) You may have to update grub, sometimes "other" installs are not immediately detected.

Am I required to have GRUB 2 to dual boot 9.10?

Not on an upgrade, legacy grub will remain, fresh install will result in Grub2

As Grub2 is the future, grub legacy is being depreciated, best to begin learning the new...

but as of now on upgrade legacy is retained and can be used, You will need to do specific steps to move to Grub2, so all should be well re-> grub upon upgrade.

So without it I can still upgrade safely?

Also, how do I save everything so I don't lose anything on my comp if something goes wrong.

Back up your home dir then you should be good to go. Also any other configs that you updated just to be safe. Copy them to a USB Pen, or CD and then you should be good to go.

Good luck....
