I wanted to switch from Jaunty to Karmic using a fresh install. I backed up my home directory to an NTFS formatted usb hard drive in Jaunty. I checked that everything copied correctly. All the folders were there, the size of my home backup matched that of the original.

After I installed Karmic, the usb drive mounts just fine, except some folders in my backup directory have disappeared. One of them looks empty, and reports input/output error when I run ls on it. The others have simply vanished.

I have installed ntfs-config and enabled write support for all drives.

This is very similar to the issue being raised here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1301293

Can someone please help me?
Thanks.
