The following is the entire content of an Australian Federal Police warning of an 'Olympic Torch' virus, contained within a post of mine to the Australian Onlineopinion Forum, where a 350 word limit applies to posts. It was emailed to me as a .pdf file from a trusted source. Obviously it is of primary concern to those using a Microsoft OS, but if it is as bad as claimed, places like the Ubuntu Forums might be one of the few places people may remain enabled to talk about it and pass on the warning.

To all OLO users,

I received this as a .pdf emailed to me from a trusted source. It is a warning issued by the Australian Federal Police. Below is its entire text.

PLEASE READ BELOW AND PASS ON AS
SOON AS POSSIBLE.

PLEASE INFORM EVERYONE
Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent and the moment that
you open these emails your computer will crash and you will not be able to fix it!
If you get an email along the lines of 'Osama Bin Laden Captured'
or 'Osama Hanged' don't open the attachment.
This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe .
Be considerate & send this warning to whomever you know.
PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS:
You should be alert during the next days:
Do not open any message with an attached filed called
'Invitation' regardless of who sent it.
It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your
computer.
This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her
contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all your contacts.
It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.
If you receive a mail called 'invitation', though sent by a friend, do not open it and shut
down your computer immediately.
This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the
most destructive virus ever.
This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind
of virus.
This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information
is kept.

End of AFP Warning.
BTW I inserted the 'http://' in front of the AFP web address to make it into a link on OLO. That wasn't in the .pdf text.

Its moments like this I'm glad I run Ubuntu Linux. I think.

I wonder?

This is the link to that OLO post: http://forum.onlineopinion.com.au/thread.asp?discussion=3156#74980

I'd be interested to know whether there are any risks to Linux users from this virus, notwithstanding our presumed immunity to viruses.

The way they type these warnings make it sounds like it's going to be the end of the world when it's (most likely) only for people using outlook on an un-patched XP who like to send chain-letters along because they're "ohsokawaiilol"

Yeah, and Hotmail/ICQ/Facebook are going to start charging to use them unless they notice that you've sent on the message to 20 other people.

Very funny but that mail you got contradicts this news on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Torch_(virus_hoax))

I think if I wanted to spread a virus I would type a mail like this and attach my virus to it.
