I installed Karmic alongside Windows with Wubi. After trying to boot into Ubuntu, I just get a grub shell.

I just tried to run in live CD mode. The disc won't even boot. The system just starts Windows from the hard disk.

Wubi installs in a folder in windows and it boots of of the grubdos4.
Should come up as a dual boot as windows first ubuntu second.
All you have to do is pick your password and size to allocate to ubuntu.
Takes 12 minutes to install off of cd. 692 meg or so.
Can just uninstall if you want or it gets trashed by yourself.
Download .osi file of the version you want. Burn to disk. Insert disk, will ask
you if you want WUBI install say yes and off you go. 12 minutes to go.

Think of it as an APP in Windows if you prefer. Will locate inself in C: right next to Users.

Done it a lot and never had a bad install. Remember no Grub problems.

Anytime get problems fsck in root and it fixes itself.

Have a nice day.

EDIT: It was my CD, not the Ubuntu image. I mounted the image with Daemon Tools instead of using the disc, and the Wubi install worked fine. Sorry for calling it broken software. I've been dealing with a lot of crappy non-working software lately and got frustrated.
