I got fed up with Windows, and I heard that Ubuntu these days was a lot easier to set up than Gentoo was six years ago, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

The 9.10 live CD booted into X beautifully, and it looked like a great setup and I was thrilled.

After the install, I logged on to my new system and it was just a tty terminal on a black screen. startx returned an error, it didn't recognize my wireless card, etc. It was just like my Gentoo experience 6 years ago.

My question for the forum is: is it possible to copy the active settings for the hardware that the live CD auto-detects into the install on the hard drive, thus enabling one to avoid having to configure every last stupid device on one's system? Which settings should I copy?

(My second question for the forum is: why doesn't the installation process do this automatically?)
