While trying to upgrade thru the update manager I'm getting this error in the stage of "setting new software channels"

What do I do?

I would just ignore it and wait a day or two.

So I take it it's not a prob on my side
Not very encouraging for an upgrade beginning but I guess I just wait

No, I don't think it's anything you've done wrong, as the error message says, it's probably due to a network error - unless you desperately need to use Ubuntu One right away, it should not affect the rest of the upgrade.

Oh, I see, I don't think that should happen. I found someone had a similar problem some time back, in this thread:

It's definitely a networking problem, and not anything at your end. Maybe try what's suggested in that thread?
