I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.1 from 9.04, and when I did, the window borders, Kickoff menu, and taskbar all had corrupted graphics (http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=133726&stc=1&d=1256923173), though I could click where an icon *should* be, and it would work correctly. I tried installing Compiz, and when that was the default window manager, my everything was as it should be (http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=133727&stc=1&d=1256923173). I tried Metacity also, and with that, my window borders looked right, though the Kickoff and taskbar were still broken (http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=133728&stc=1&d=1256923173).
I even tried completely reinstalling, using a Kubuntu 9.1 CD, and got the exact same results. Do note that this problem does not happen on the Gnome desktop, only the KDE one.

My system is a IBM Thinkpad R51 laptop(Same internals as a T40, FYI).

According to the Systeminfo widget:
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1600MHz
GPU: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]
Audio: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B (Intel 82801DB-ICH4)
Audio: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B (Intel 82801DB-ICH4 - IEC958)
Audio: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B ()
Audio: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B (Intel 82801DB-ICH4 - MIC ADC)
Audio: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B (Intel 82801DB-ICH4 - MIC2 ADC)
Audio: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B (Intel 82801DB-ICH4 - ADC2)
Network: WLAN Interface
Network: Networking Interface
Network: Loopback device Interface

What should I try?

Thanks,

Other people who installed Karmic had to upgrade their ATI drivers --- see this thread:
