Please help me in using Irc

I would like to listen(or what ever it is called) to #Ubuntu channel in irc.freenode.net . But I am totally new to ircs and haven't used any , before . When I searched , I got a site named http://freenode.net . But I don't know what to do with it . Can anyone please help ? What all tools are needed ?. Is google chrome enough ? Iam currently using chrome .

You need more than a browser. You need an IRC client. Pidgin can handle it, but XChat is better. There's also Quassel (Qt) and Irssi (terminal). See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InternetRelayChat
