I have one of those netbooks without the convenience of having a CD-ROM. I imagine the possibility of booting from a USB memory unit. Can anyone provide me with the necessary information regarding the process of installing ubuntu on my WinXP netbook? I guess the forum already might have some information on this, but I am new here, and it would be of great help if somebody could explain simply how to go forth from having a slow winxp netbook to the state of free software bliss and hopefully speed.

If you have access to another computer with a CDROM drive running Windows or Ubuntu, you can use the "usb startup disc creator" from the live CD to make a usb install drive. This would be the easiest way. If you only have the netbook then you can use UNetbootin to create a usb install drive. See this tutorial:

Write back if you need more help.

And welcome to the Ubuntu forums!
