I recently installed Karmic and I have not been able to play music using Rythmbox it says: "Playback Error Unable to start playback pipeline" for every song. Though all the songs are working fine using VLC or even when I just hover over them. Anyone else having this problem? Possibly found a solution?

Never mind I seemed to have fixed it!

Yes, accidentally xD
Thanks! As of now, all previous bugs I had are gone and Karmic is running perfectly for me.

For goodness sake, don't be so secretive. Don't just say you fixed it without sharing your solution with everyone else! That's what these forums are for.

I am having the same problem and I wish I had your insight to solve it.

(And what the heck is a "playback pipeline"?)

hi all. i had this same problem, and it also occurred when i upgraded from jaunty to karmic.

i closed, removed, and reinstalled rhythmbox using the ubuntu software center per the advice here (http://www.insidesocal.com/click/2009/11/latest-ubuntu-karmic-fail---rh.html) and the problem seems to be gone.

i'm running 9.10 on a dell inspiron 700m with a mostly stock configuration. of course, take this advice with the appropriate dosage of salt due someone who just made their first post on here. i obviously have no idea what a playback pipeline is and hope i never have to find out.

cheers!

I have a clean installation of 9.10. tried to completely remove Rhythmbox. Deleted all references of Rhythmbox in home folder, reinstalled, and still receiving the same error when trying to listen to anything:
"Unable to start playback pipeline"
Anyone has any valid solution for this?

This is not a solution for playing a file in Rhythmbox, but it will allow you to update your ipod with a song that Rhythmbox refuses to play.

step 1. drag song(s) from inside folder(nautilus) ontop of ipod icon that is mounted inside Rhythmbox.

That's it. Ipod updated.

I had an album that would not play in Rhythmbox, giving me the "Playback Error Unable to start playback pipeline." I wanted the album on my ipod but could not directly update it from dragging the files from within Rhythmbox ontop of the ipod icon. But from a folder, it worked.

Sigh, how was it fixed?

This is the most annoying thing anyone can do in a support forum, post a problem that others have and then just say "fixed" without sharing the solution.

I didn't it was an accident as I stated earlier.. that was such a long time ago, I just remember it prompt me itself for some sort of file to download after restarting and it worked after that. Clean installs are usually better, you get less bugs.
