View Full Version : [ubuntu] Cannot Boot after Karmic install, Grub Error 15

Ok, so I installed karmic, however I haven't actually been able to boot up. what my computer tells me is this.

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 15

I've tried reinstalling, Karmic, I've tried reinstalling grub2 but none of that seems to work - I've read that your not supposed to edit grub.cfg but as far as I can tell everything is right in there as it should be. I ran this script that gave me some information, but I am not sure what to do with it so here it is.

I'm sorry to see you're having no luck getting help on this. I'm having the same problem, after an install of Karmic 9.10 and restart I got same Error 15.

While I was installing I noticed that my drives we're appearing as "/nvidia/mapper/xxxxxxxx" rather than the usual "/dev/sdXX" so I assume this has something to do with it.

Did you notice this about your install. I have Karmic installed on another laptop and it works flawlessly, just on this home PC did it have to misbehave itself.

Everything worked nicely in Jaunty so this is a regression.

Thanks, I'll give it a blast.

It's a pity, I went and installed Jaunty instead, but knowing it's this simple I'll definitely give Karmic another try now.

It's a probable cause alright, the nVidia controller has RAID possibilities, switched off in the BIOS and it never was a problem in the past with Jaunty, Hardy etc. but obviously Karmic is noticing the RAID functionality behind the fact.

I'll post back soon the result.

JUST NOTICED: the standard liveCD has the "nodmraid" option too so I'll give that a go before I download a whole alternate disk, this might save people the trouble.
