i was just wondering if you upgrade via the update method built into ubuntu what settings might you lose? would you loseany documents etc?

You shouldn't loose any user settings, but sometimes new packages require different configurations. I prefer to do a clean install. If you have a separate partition for home (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome), then your settings are also preserved, even with the clean install. Anyway, you won't loose personal documents.

Upgrading through the update manager will not erase any user settings or your personal documents.
