seeing as the title of the 64bit install live cd is "ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso" I was wondering if it also supported the core 2 duo.

Absolutely. I have that chipset on my laptop running 9.10 AMD64 with no trouble at all.

amd X86_64 is named that way because it is the 'instruction set architecture' amd developed for 64 bit chips. (Instruction set architecture is basically the assembly language code). Both Intel and Amd use it.
