updating

I can update via the update manager from 9.04 to 9.10 and hopefully leave all my programmes in a working condition
or i can download a hard copy of 9.10 to disk and use that ,can i update from disk or can i only do a fresh install from disk

You can update using the alternate disk, see instructions here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading , scroll down a bit to find alternate cd/dvd...
