How do you beat world 7 in Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES??

We're stumped! We're up to the pirate ship, and we can get to the boss but he's so damn hard to beat. Not being able to move when he lands on the ground after jumping is the worst, he just comes right over and crushes you!

Hints, anyone?

Jump just as he's landing. You only get paralysed if you are on the floor when he lands, so just make sure you are in the air when he does(He does stay still himself a short while after landing, giving you the chance to hit him if you are also having difficulties with that).
EDIT: If I think this is the level I enjoyed as a kid it's possible to swim right under the ship then jump back up at the end of the level, effectively letting you avoid every threat the level offers and pick your suit to use for the boss(I liked the furry suit, I think it was down+B makes you invincible for a short time if you don't move, very handy at times).
