adding starting in terminal into your xubuntu

Is there a way to start in terminal mode in xubuntu and add this to the grub bootloader.

There are three and half hour journey (round trip) I am doing regularly and I just want a terminal with some terminal based programs for reading - maybe listening-

but mainly for shell scripting so I don't need to consume so much power (allowing me to use the laptop on both rounds of the trip)
