New install, 40gig?

Been trying ubuntu 9.04 and decided to install fresh after formatting vista.
Used the vista disc to format (only let me do quick format) then installed ubuntu.
Problem is my disk space is showing over 40gig used.
How can this be?

You can delete partitions during install process or you can download Gparted live Cd (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/) and do it with it.
