I'm going to install 9.10 tomorrow. Will I need to back up my files before I do this?

Yes. Always assume trouble.

Why don't you do a clean Install. I think that when you do it'll roperly change the boot otherwse it may be the same:(

Clean install or upgrade, you should back up your data prior to installation unless you have a separate /home partition which you will manually tell the installer not to format.
