Trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on a Compaq nc6400 [approx 2ghz, 4gb RAM) alongside Windows 7 (evaluation version) and the install went ok (although it did complain about not being able to copy a file but appeared to continue ok) but every time I reboot (without the CD in the drive), the message "finishing ubuntu install" appears when it boots up...

And my wireless network card isn't detected (which I'll sort out once the install works as the install resets EVERYTHING)

And the software manager says "this install is not valid for this data" or something like that...

Anyhow, I can connect to t'interweb via a cable but not wirelessly so can download stuff if needed but how on earth do you get it to stop re-installing itself :rolleyes:

I would try reinstalling.

Keep in mind, 9.10 is not "stable" yet.

I installed 9.10 on my HP nc6400 without difficulty. Everything works. Can you tell me a bit more about how you tried to install Karmic. Did you do a clean install? Perhaps I can help.
