Updates happen every 6 months. It's really not something to lose sleep over! ;)

I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic on Sunday. It works great. I update daily and by the time the release happens I will already have the stable system. It's VERY stable now.

It will be around 4pm UTC time. At least it was like that few times before.

The best time to do it is the weekend.
A couple of friends bring their laptops over and we download using the torrents.
The download that finishes last provides the blank cd.

Way to waste everybody involved's bandwidth, guy.

Did you download Karmic using the Synaptic Package Manager or from the website? I am not seeing the "a new version is available" in my Synaptic Package Manager prompt. Can I burn an image from the website to CD and then do a fresh install? What's the best way to approach this?

1600 UTC -- This is mainly so mirrors have sufficient time to replicate. You've waited six months, what's 12 or so more hours. ;)

Then just first offer it via the Bittorrent protocol, if it's about bandwidth.

Download the ISO file from one of those mirrors, burn it on CD/DVD, put CD?DVD in your CD/DVD drive, system will recognize disc with new Ubuntu and ask you to upgrade :)

is that the final ?

sveterv

Yes, these are final ISO images. You can look for them on other mirrors too, just change first two letters of the link to your country (or one close to you) code, like de, fi, sk, us, us, uk, jp, etc. You can add digits sometime to them also like se2, de2, uk2.

If you guys are going to stampede to download the new ISO, save the mirrors some bandwidth and use the torrents (http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/)

I am not sure whether some of the guys are aware of alternate cd image. you may need alternate cd image for upgrading. Till the other version, normal image with the name desktop is not upgradeable, its meant only for fresh install.I believe this still holds good for karmic.

Given the excitement , best bet is to download alternate image through torrents.

Mirrors are OK, they often are universities on a 1Gb/s links so bandwidth is not a problem. But you are right if you are talking about official (main) site.

After download ISO from mirror now I'm happy seeding at 6Mb/s :) so I will give back to people what I've taken from mirror :)

Anybody know where 9.10 "alternate" can be downloaded?

New download page only showing version 9.04 "alternate" available for download?

Thanks

Select one of the mirrors and browse through the listing. There will be a directory for 9.10.

I downloaded the ISO from a torrent on one of those mirrors a couple hours before 9.10 was officially available. After 9.10 became officially available I checked the official torrent to make sure that I got the right file. And I had NOT gotten the right file. Download the official torrent!

EDIT: Never mind. The torrent on the official site had not yet been updated from 9.04 to 9.10. But it has now been updated. I downloaded it a couple minutes too early.
