View Full Version : [ubuntu] Cannot boot with GRUB. Windows error message.

I decided to take the plunge into linux so I am a total noob right now and still trying to figure stuff out. I apologize in advance.

Anyways, I am using an old desktop with two hard drives on it. The smaller primary drive is what I am using to install the OS on. It previously was using Windows XP. The larger drive has media files on it. I decided to use this computer exclusively for linux so I deleted all of the partitions on the smaller drive and formatted it before installing ubuntu. The installation went without a hitch, but when I restart the computer to boot, I get this message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll

I thought that maybe there was some remainder of Windows that was making this happen so I completely wiped the drive using DBAN.

I reinstalled linux again and restarted the computer again. I got the same error message.

I found some previous threads of people having the same problem.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1246803
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1267602

I've read through them, however I'm still not really knowledgeable enough to understand whats going on.

I've attached some files which should describe what going on with the booting process. If anybody can decipher them and explain to me what's going on/how I can fix it, I would be very appreciative.

Results from boot_info_script032.sh

I am not an expert,by any stretch of the imagination, but if I am reading the information that you provided correctly,it appears to me that your xp was installed on the larger hard drive. Are you trying to dual-boot?:(

No, I am not trying to dual boot. Right now I am just trying to get Ubuntu working exclusively. I am not sure why or how XP would be installed on the larger drive. As far as I know there has only been media data transferred onto that drive.

Nevertheless, since linux is the only OS that has been installed on the smaller primary master drive after the DBAN wipe, and that hard drive is set to boot first in BIOS, I am confused why it is not it is not detecting GRUB which should be installed on that drive.

The reason I say that is:

db1: __________________________________________________ _______________________

File system: ntfs
Boot sector type: Windows XP
Boot sector info: No errors found in the Boot Parameter Block.
Operating System:
Boot files/dirs: /boot.ini /ntldr /NTDETECT.COM /NTBOOTDD.SYS

and then:

Disk /dev/sdb: 163.9 GB, 163928604672 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19929 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

/dev/sdb2 4111 19603 124447522+ 7 HPFS/NTFS

sdb is apparently the larger harddrive.

Maybe I am just imagining something that is not there.:(

BIOS, grub and Ubuntu do not always agree on which drive is first. I believe the problem is more often with mixed pata & sata drives.

If you can in BIOS change the order the drives are booted in. It looks like the windows drive is the boot drive in BIOS.

I had the same trouble with a mixed PATA and SATA setup, which had worked until I installed Windows 7. GRUB 2 worked fine from the larger, SATA Linux drive, and I can even get into Windows from the GRUB menu, so I swapped the order of my hard drives to boot first from the SATA drive. Windows must install part of itself on any drive which is connected when Windows is installed.
