I installed the free microsoft security essentials and it found ccu.exe

I was surprised it hit so quick.

Going against expectations here... you must have browsed somewhere dangerous, or not been behind a firewall. I ran a WinXP guest at work for about 6 months with no security software and it didn't get any infections...

I agree with this, I have a computer that is set up primarily for World of Warcraft which has a default installation of XP and nothing else installed other than WoW. It's been this way for several months and I just downloaded McAfee and ran it. Only cookies were found, nothing more.

Heck I had a WinXP install on my tower for a year and a half (before Win7RC came out). No anti-virus. No firewall. Just stock WinXP SP3+personal software. No virus/malware/adware/bugs.

Infecting a machine today tells a GREAT deal more about the usage habits of the user, than it does about the OS.

Mainly the only sites I know of to auto try and infect users are adult explicit sites and sites that say they offer free serial keys for all software and stuff. Lay off these sites when on windows and you should be alright. Using firefox should warn you about this but some sites get by and still will get you infected so be careful. Makes me happy I have been off windows for years just for the idea of being safe without having to worry about anything even though I usually don't hit sites like that!

so the upshot seems to be that you should boot into Linux if you want to view adult content

LOL...this discussion reminds me of the pornview package available in the Ubuntu repos

actually all i did was surf a couple of sites with the ie browser. they were 'warez' related. i had done a google search and clicked thru a few sites seeing what was there. but i did not download a thing.
i am so used to using linux, that malware threats are mostly of no concern and catching something was a sort of a shock.

Funny enough one of the 'kids' I teach (ok not such a kid, he's 17 and bigger than me!) had loads of viruses on his computer. His mates told me it was because he downloaded a lot of porn. As his teacher it was my responsibility to tell him that if he must view porn he should probably do so in linux.
