Ubuntu 9.04 live CD not getting partitions

I've been trying to install Ubuntu on a friend's laptop. It's a Dell Inspiron 1420. It seems to have a hard time getting the partitions after selecting time and keyboard layout. I've left it running for 10-20 minutes but it still refuses to continue.

Hm, is it showing any progress at all?
Partitioning can take a long time.
Just give it a little more time, if it still doesn't work just try the whole thing again.

Well, there's really no progress bar. It tries to start the partition editor, which gives me a progress bar. Once that reaches 100% it goes away and just kind of sits there.

Erm...well...after a bit of poking around and experimenting I found that the hard drive simply did not work. At all. Oh well. Looks like I'll be buying a new one.
