Hello

Today I downloaded and burned the Ubuntu 9.10 RC cd iso to a cd.

I booted my computer from it.

When the desktop came, the desktop background was black.

However, everything else seemed to be working, including desktop effects and connecting to the
internet and browsing with Firefox.

I right-clicked the desktop and clicked Change Desktop Background and selected different wallpapers, but still the desktop background remained black.

Why is this happening and is there any way to fix it?

Hello

I disabled desktop effects and the background became normal.

When I enabled desktop effects again, the background became black again.

I disabled desktop effects again, the background became normal.

Why is this happening?

Desktop effects didn't make the background black on my computer on previous versions of Ubuntu.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 RC to my computer.

After installing it and my computer booted, I enabled desktop
effects to see if the problem was gone, but it was still there, so
I disabled desktop effects.

Desktop effects worked fine on previous versions of Ubuntu on my
computer, so why is this happening?

My computer has 1 GB RAM, a 200 GB hard disk and an
ATI Radeon 9200 Pro graphics card.

Maybe this is a problem related to my graphics card?

Please help me fix this.

Exactly -- AMD/ATI dropped driver support for all but the newer HD 3x/4x/5x cards a few months back, relegating everyone with the older legacy cards to using the Radeon Open Source driver.

So, what it boils down to is how well the open source driver supports your particular card.

And, before you ask, NO, there are no new ATI drivers that will work in Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10 with the legacy cards.

The radeon open source driver worked fine with my graphics card on
previous versions of Ubuntu and on other Linux distros I've
tried (OpenSUSE, Mandriva).

Also, compiz also worked fine on previous versions of Ubuntu and
other distros I've tried.

This is the first time this is happening.

When desktop effects are disabled, Ubuntu seems to work fine, but when desktop effects are enabled, the desktop background becomes
black, although everything else seems to work fine.

How do I fix this?
