Hey guys (and girls)

I have been using Windows since my laptop died, and I am beginning to feel that I'm missing something.

Ubuntu was a great operating system for me. I just wish that I could switch back to Ubuntu after a while, but with this Windows 7 craze, it looks like I've been caught between a rock and a hard place. I have been using the RC for a few months, and I am beginning to feel it will be very hard to get away from the pleasantness of Windows 7. Also, my stepdad won't allow me to install Linux on the computer I use.

Again, am I missing anything?

You're missing the concept of dual booting.

You're missing the concept of dual booting.

My stepdad probably won't allow me to do that either, in case I wreck the hard drive

Tell your stepdad that you're much more likey to mess up the HDD by running the Windows 7 RC(an unfinished, unmaintained version) tahn by dual-booting Ubuntu and the final version of Windows 7.

If he doesn't allow you to install, even on dual boot, then don't do it. Nevertheless, you could ask him why he doesn't want to allow and provide him some good reasons why you should do it. There are plenty of them, you just need to make your case with good arguments and show that you have the necessary background to not screw up Windows 7 in the process.

I knew it! KDE 4.3 - the only problem with it is, though, that I am very used to the Superbar of Windows 7. *changes taskbar properties*

If your step dad won't allow you to dual boot even, then you might want to consider installing virtual box and have a virtual Ubuntu machine.

Or you could install Ubuntu on the entire harddrive and have windows 7 as a virtual machine in seamless mode; no difference at all :P

Installing Xubuntu on Virtualbox inside Windows 7 :P

Windows 7 is quite good. Dual-boot is better, but if the owner of the computer does not allow for that, then revisit the idea again when you live on your own. In the meantime, W7 is a good experience.

Cool idea! That's probably the best option for now :)

There's also Wubi (http://wubi-installer.org/) .
You can dual boot without messing with the hard drive at all, it will just create a large file/directory on your windows disk that ubuntu will see as a partition. I'm pretty sure it's very safe, if you don't mind a little performance drop. It doesn't even need a different boot loader.

Alternatively, there should be a live cd or live usb you could use. AFAIK they can be set up to store settings and files so they can be used as a regular installation.

hehe yeah but I don't mind XFCE, it's not my personal preference but I can see why people like/use it :)

Use Windows 7. If you know what you're doing you'll never have problems just like Ubuntu.

If you like Win7... use Win7! There's no reason that you HAVE to use Linux.

At this point, to be 100% honest, the main reason I'm sticking with it is the customizability of its appearance.

I'm not a windows fan myself but.... that being said... You use what you feel comfortable using... If you like windows 7 at the moment then run windows 7 for now until you get bored of it. If you want Ubuntu as well then run it in a virtual machine inside windows 7 if you are able to do so. But don't feel compelled to use Ubuntu because you are part of the community. You use what makes you happy!
