I'm using a slow connection to the Internet right now with a capped amount of daily megabyte usage, so I'm trying to be as conservative with my my downloads as possible. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the trouble to upload files to a server and download via HTTP, or to go ahead and continue using SSH to transmit the files directly from home to where I am right now. I don't know much about SSH so I'm imagining that for every megabyte of data that I want, I'm downloading a certain percentage more on top due to the encryption. Am I right about this?

I'm not sure, but I don't think that you'd be downloading any more data. However, you would get some overhead from having to encrypt all the files before sending them. Not a lot though (I'm not even sure it'd be noticable). That's how I transfer files between my computers.
